December 2014 WHAT IS IT ABOUT -- THIS SEASON? Lo and behold! All of a sudden, we are at the end of another year. If any of you have been to the movies yet and seen the new films "Interstellar or the Theory of Everything", it will remind you that there really is no time at all. What there is however, is the illusion of it and of course the cosmic understanding of how vast the universe is and we only see a small part of it, depending on our focus. I am always drawn to the quantum theory of physics, a subject I know very little about in reality. What I do understand however, is that we all get so caught up in the minutiae of daily living, and forget that right where we are, no matter in Nigeria, Paris, New York or Florida, we are all on one fragile planet spinning in the heavens right now. To me, we seem to forget all too often, that there is a much larger purpose for all of us. Could it be what humans have struggled after for centuries, since the dawn of our civilization as far back as recorded history will allow? What is that you might be wondering? I think it is a way to live life with the least amount of stress and more so, safety, free from harm. That seems to be a resounding theme that emerged this year if any of you read the article in Time magazine this February, 2014, entitled the Mindful Revolution: The science of finding focus in a stressed-out, multitasking culture. And so here it is, the end of another year, when many take time out to wonder about what they have achieved, what they lost, and take a general barometer of their lives. When all is said and done, what will you remember? Many philosophers and spiritual people say it is the moments that you were loving, kind and compassionate with others, including yourself. Perhaps that is what it is about after all; the holidays of Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa, and many others I am sure I am too limited in my knowledge to know of. Yet, it seems to be the one time of year that people all over the world acknowledge something larger than them and celebrate their humanity, what they have in common. I recently saw a New Year's card in a book shop that I fell in love with. It says, "There has to be at least one day a year to remind us that we are here for something besides ourselves." Eric Sevareid, (1912-1992); hence the title for this month's newsletter. I am reminded of the words to a song sung over 4 decades ago that say, "If you smile at me, I will understand, for that is something, everyone, everywhere, does in the same language!" The Dalai Lama wrote a piece entitled "The True Meaning of Life:" 'We are visitors on this planet; we are here for ninety or one hundred years at the very most. During that period, we must try to do something good, something useful with our lives. If you contribute to other people's happiness, you will find the true goal, the true meaning of life." Many spiritual and religious traditions teach to make the world a better place to live. No matter what language we speak, or where we were born, the collective consciousness on the planet during this season, especially on Christmas Eve or day seems to project a fleeting feeling of momentary awareness of do no harm and receive no harm, a Buddhist mantra. To the naysayers and doomsday prophets, I counter any negative predictions that in the end love will overcome all. History teaches us the lesson as we move through the centuries when we say never again, and we try to help others do just that. Why else would we have a world court that prosecutes crimes against humanity? Yes, there are many, and the same genocide that was practiced centuries ago is still going on, and now thanks to satellite technology very little is hidden or shrouded in the unknown domain anymore. When I think of the change in many individuals thinking which brought down the Berlin Wall; the end to apartheid in South Africa; Russia trying democracy via Gorbachev; and the students in Tiananmen Square who lost their lives demonstrating for freedom I am confronted with a saying Dwight Eisenhower once made, "The governments had better get out of the way and give the people what they want." That is what most people want, the opportunity to live their lives in peace, harmony, making life easier or better for their offspring, and something to work towards and believe in. The axiom that where there is no vision, the people perish, I believe is true. So, as you embrace this season, ask yourself, what is my vision? What can I do to make the world a better place to be in? Gandhi said "be the change we wish to see in the world." If not you, who? If not now, when?
